In most cases, meters are tested at the AWWA suggested flow rates for the size of meter. This is a sound basis for determining the condition of a meter, but it does not provide enough information to accurately determine the financial impact of replacing the meter. To accurately predict the financial gain or loss of replacing a given meter we need to know the flow rates at which the customer uses water. For example what does a test at 250 gallons per minute tell us about the financial impact of a meter that never has flows of over 100 gallons per minute?

To make the best possible use of your meter testing data, it is necessary to know how much of a meters flow is at each of the test flows. This is most accurate if the meter has been flow recorded, and this data is used to determine the best flow rates at which to test. When this data is input into the financial analysis section of our meter testing program, an accurate assessment of the financial impact can be projected.
